MIMEX 2016, in-conjunction with Shipbuild Malaysia 2016 is the only specialised marine and offshore event in Malaysia that brings together an international congregation of shipbuilders, marine and offshore companies, marine and shipbuilding technology providers and also supporting industries in the shipbuilding hub of Sibu, Sarawak, to showcase the latest developments in the Malaysia maritime and shipbuilding industry.
About the shipbuilding industry in Sibu, Sarawak
The Malaysian government wants the shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) industry in Sarawak to be developed in order to create a name for the state. For Sarawak alone, the SBSR industry generated revenue of RM2.83bn in 2013 and succeeded in creating more business and employment opportunities for the local people. Sarawak exported 70% of the ships manufactured, with the remaining kept for the local market. Ships manufactured in Malaysia are exported to neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines and Brunei.
