Security
Security conditions can change rapidly.
Visitors should work through a trusted local host, keep a flexible itinerary, avoid demonstrations and crowds, and follow authorities’ directions. Keep a printed copy of host and accommodation details, remain on established routes – especially outside Damascus – and do not photograph military, security or government sites.
Communications
Syria’s international dialling code is +963. Buy a local SIM through an authorised outlet, taking a valid passport with a current entry stamp or visa; this is required for foreign-customer registration. Keep essential contact details, addresses and journey information available offline, as telecommunications and power can be interrupted without notice. Be mindful that digital communications may be monitored.
Visa Requirements
For eligible nationalities, a visitor visa can be obtained on arrival at Damascus International Airport. At passport control, travellers should provide documentation explaining the purpose of their visit, such as a hotel reservation or invitation letter. Entry rules and requirements can change at short notice, so confirm arrangements before departure.
Language
Arabic is the language of daily life and official dealings. English is used by some business and hotel staff but should not be assumed beyond international-facing settings. A local facilitator is invaluable for official visits, and documents or business cards in English and Arabic are helpful. A few Arabic greetings, beginning with as salamu alaykum, are warmly received.
Currency
The Syrian pound is the local currency.
Cash is essential: cards are not widely accepted and ATMs can be unreliable. Exchange money through banks or official exchange counters, retain receipts and confirm which denominations are being quoted before paying, as the Central Bank of Syria’s official bulletin now uses the new Syrian pound. Ask your hotel or host in advance about prevailing payment arrangements.
Etiquette & Dress
Damascus is hospitable and socially formal. Dress modestly, particularly at religious sites, and conduct yourself discreetly. Avoid political activity and contentious public discussion. Ask permission before photographing people, do not use a phone at checkpoints and carry photo identification.
Dining & Drinking
Meals are often an occasion for generosity and conversation, with shared mezze offering a convivial introduction to Syrian cuisine. Established hotels and reputable restaurants are sensible choices. During Ramadan, observe local practice and refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public between sunrise and sunset; alcohol availability varies by venue.
Transport
Arrange airport transfers, drivers and inter-city travel through your hotel or a trusted local provider familiar with routes and procedures. Roads, checkpoints, curfews, border crossings and flight schedules can change without notice. Do not drive after dark and follow all instructions at checkpoints.
Tipping
Tipping is appreciated for service but should remain a modest gesture rather than a fixed percentage. For taxis and meals, agree fares and service inclusions beforehand, keep small cash denominations ready and let a local host guide you where practice is unclear.
Health
Check current travel-health advice well ahead of departure, carry essential prescribed medicines in their original packaging with a clinician’s documentation and bring an adequate supply for the stay. Follow safe food and drinking-water precautions. Secure insurance that explicitly covers medical evacuation: the availability of medicines and emergency care can be limited and evacuation may be difficult to arrange.
Time Management
Syria operates on UTC+3 yearround, without daylight-saving clock changes. Arrange meetings well in advance, confirm them on the day, and build flexibility around official holidays, Ramadan, and changes to transport and access.
Electricity
Electricity is 220V at 50Hz. European-style, round-pin connections are used, though socket types vary, so take a universal adaptor. A charged power bank and a separate charging lead are prudent.
