Interview: Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Qatar Chamber, on strengthening resilience strategies and accelerating diversification

To what extent are businesses adapting their strategies in light of recent geopolitical volatility and the resulting shifts in trade patterns?

SHEIKH KHALIFA: The latest regional developments have underscored the importance of resilience and agility in global trade. Qatar’s response has been to broaden supplier networks, adopt alternative shipping routes, and invest in advanced logistics and digital supply chain solutions. The country’s infrastructure, integrated logistics ecosystem and strong public-private coordination have allowed it to maintain reliable trade flows and market access even during challenging periods. As global supply chains evolve, these strengths enable Qatar to manage volatility effectively, anchoring its role as a leading regional centre for trade. What is particularly noteworthy is that adaptability has become a core business strategy. Companies are increasingly focused on building supply chains that are flexible and capable of withstanding geopolitical and market shocks.

In what ways is the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) evolving in Qatar’s economy?

SHEIKH KHALIFA: SMEs are becoming a cornerstone of Qatar’s economic future and a key driver of diversification and private sector growth. Qatar Chamber sees significant opportunities ahead for SMEs in a number of sectors. As the economy expands, SMEs are increasingly integrating into major industrial, infrastructure and energy value chains as suppliers, service providers, technology partners and specialised subcontractors. Their growing participation strengthens local content, enhances national capabilities, and supports a more resilient and competitive economy. SMEs will play a vital role in creating jobs, fostering innovation and supporting long-term economic transformation. At the same time, accelerating digital transformation through investment in artificial intelligence, smart logistics and data-driven infrastructure will enhance productivity, efficiency and global connectivity. Equally important is investment in human capital and fostering a culture of innovation to ensure businesses remain adaptable in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

What factors will be most important in sustaining investor confidence in non-energy sectors as global companies increasingly weigh geopolitical risk?

SHEIKH KHALIFA: Investor confidence in Qatar’s non-energy sectors will depend on a combination of stability, resilience and policy consistency. Qatar’s strong fiscal position, modern infrastructure, transparent regulatory framework and long-term vision provide a solid foundation for investment. Continued regulatory modernisation, digital transformation, market stability, efficient resource management and strong public-private sector collaboration are key pillars of global stability. Ultimately, investors seek predictability and confidence in future growth. Qatar’s track record of stability, resilience and forward-looking economic policies positions it strongly as a preferred destination for long-term investment beyond the energy sector.

How can the private sector strengthen Qatar’s position as a regional centre for trade, logistics and re-export activity as global supply chains evolve?

SHEIKH KHALIFA: As global supply chains evolve, the private sector can strengthen the country’s role as a regional trade and logistics hub by positioning Qatar not simply as a transit point, but as a value-creation platform. This means attracting regional distribution centres – expanding value-added services such as assembly, packaging and fulfilment – and leveraging digital technologies to improve supply chain visibility and efficiency. Businesses should diversify trade partnerships, develop stronger links with emerging markets in Asia and Africa, and capitalise on Qatar’s ports, airports and free zones. Also important is fostering innovation, skills development and public-private collaboration to ensure Qatar remains agile and competitive.
