After emerging as one of the GCC's most vibrant and diversified economies in the 1990s and early 2000s thanks in large part to a dynamic financial services sector, Bahrain faced headwinds in the form of the 2008 financial crisis and the Arab Spring, before contending with the coronavirus pandemic.
