Peruvian mining focuses on technology and human development

In this Global Platform video, Víctor Gobitz, CEO of Peruvian mining company Antamina, discusses how the industry is leveraging new technologies while prioritising the development of highland communities. These focuses converge to advance the ESG standards of the mining sector.

In the case of Peru, when you compare the human development index in three different regions, in the coastal area we have a higher human development index when you compare with the highlands or the jungle. Mining activities are developed in the highlands where we have a lower human development index, so the development of mining activity is one way to reduce this gap. Also we have to take into account that Peru – in terms of copper production, zinc, lead or gold and silver – is a powerhouse. And that represents, in terms of GDP for our country, 12 to 15 percent.

When you analyse our mining GDP 50 percent is copper and 30 percent is gold, so right now our country is facing a good environment. The current government has developed this concept called REMI. REMI is in a space where mining companies, NGOs, universities, consultants and the government develop the vision for the future of the mining industry. Peru requires a clear message and the promotion of mining activities as part of the development of our country.

This pandemic created an acceleration in terms of the use of new technology in support of mining activities regarding the logistic commercial aspect, accounting or financial. We are operating a remote mode, which means significantly higher productivity. In the second trend, we are taking advantage of new technology in order to have more of the internet of things trying to analyse online the performance, and also taking advantage of big data and machine learning in order to improve our processing activities. Taking all this information and decisions online, you will see at the end a better outcome.

Through this process we have increased our ESG standards and we are not only taking consideration of the short term, but our main effort is the legacy behind this investment. We developed this concept in the region of Ancash. The first 20 years have been very successful, but taking into account that in the mining industry it’s very dynamic activity, and we have to be ready to tackle the future challenges to improve our productivity and the performance of the whole business.

Right now we are working in this programme to increase our productivity, increase the performance, but looking in the long term. Part of the programme is to develop our human capital: we are working in this diversity program but also developing younger people.
