Ahmed bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC)
Building a Global City Through Targeted Investments
In an interview with Global Platform, Ahmed bin Sulayem, executive chairman of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), speaks as to how targeted investments in the emirate have helped to build a global city. Between new trade ties with Asia, business connections with Africa and the challenge of mitigating risks amid global volatility, the DMCC has been able to learn a lot of lessons from the global financial downturn. The emirate is continuing to innovate and expand, as well as maintain competitiveness.
I believe it’s in the DNA. When Dubai discovered oil, that was the good news. The bad news was it was not enough. They had to build infrastructure for the future. The government had to work 10 times harder and provide services, tourism and so on. Whether it was trade or infrastructure, the focus was on the next generation, and that investment paid off; that investment opened the door for the new Dubai to come.
