government offices are open from Sunday to Thursday, 8.00am until 2.30pm, while businesses typically operate from 9.00am to 6.00pm. Shops are generally open seven days a week, from 10.00am until 10.00pm. Operating hours are shorter during Ramadan.
The international calling code for the UAE is +971, and the local code for RAK is 07. Pre-paid SIM cards can easily be purchased from licensed local vendors, and top-up credit can be bought in denominations of Dh25 ($6.80), Dh50 ($13.60) and Dh100 ($27.20). The emirate has a varied landscape, encompassing mountains, sea and desert. The country’s tallest mountain, the 1930-metre Jebel Jais, is located in RAK. Temperatures are generally warm, ranging from 12°C to 25°C in December and 30°C to 40°C in July.
The most common means of conveyance locally is the car. While hiring a car is easy and affordable, taxis are also a popular option for visitors. An international driving licence is not required to hire a car in the UAE, and one drives on the right-hand side of the road.
