What's this event about?
Much of the banking and finance world has been embroiled in a whirlwind these past 2 years, the magnitude of which was so great that its ripple effect manifested into an export slump for Malaysia and caused the economy to contract by an overall 1.7% in 2009. Nevertheless we were spared from a full blown banking crisis, in part due to strong financial supervision and prudent risk management practices. However, most would attribute this to a stronger, sizeable and well-diversified banking industry that emerged following the 1997/98 Asian financial crisis.
After a decade of consolidation and progressive reform, the industry’s resilience in the last crisis signifies its level of maturity and preparedness. This augurs well for the industry as it moves into a new era of liberalisation and globalistion, as envisaged in the Financial Sector Master Plan. This is gearing up to be both an exciting and challenging year for the banking and financial sector with new entrants intensifying the competition but simultaneously bringing global market linkages, technological transfer and international best practices to the local scene.
